Young people around the world face one big challenge in their period of transition from schools and training institutions into the labor markets – unemployment. With the backdrop of global financial crisis, youth unemployment poses a critical challenge for the young people. Let alone the society.
In 2009, unemployment has affected 75.8 million youth, surpassing the rates for other age groups. Spells of unemployment in youth foreshadow lowered levels of human capital and weakened labor force for the society. In the long-run, youth unemployment will aggravate socio-economic inequalities, create social unrest and political instability. Long-term joblessness will also have an adverse effect on the future livelihood of the individual.
The Global Youth Conference 2012, a flagship conference hosted by the Youth-to-Youth (Y2Y) Community at the World Bank, seeks to address this critical issue and tackle it together, through innovative ideas and inclusive conversations with senior experts and young leaders from all around the world.
