Mongolia Global Peace Leadership Conference

Celebration of Peace and History

In August, GP Connect staff members participated in the Global Peace Leadership Conference (GPLC) in Ulaanbataar, Mongolia.  Attended by over 500 delegates from over 20 nations, the GPLC coincided with Mongolia’s many historic anniversaries:  the 2220th year of the Founding of Mongolia’s Statehood  - Hun Empire and the centennial of the country’s restoration of democracy. In celebration of these historic events, the Peace Festival of Nations of Hun Origin became the theme under the auspice of President Tsakhia Elbegdorj.

Dr. Charles Phillips, Executive Director of GP Connect! addressed the theme of empowering civil society, especially through a focus on social entrepreneurship, volunteering and community-driven development.  Other sessions focused on  the possibilities for cooperation and peace in Northeast Asia. Several lawmakers  from countries in Asia and Africa participated in the Parliamentary Roundtable discussion that was focused on the continuing division of the Korean peninsula and the need for on-going regional dialogue. Dr. Dock Woo Nan, Congressman from North Korea, spoke of the historical relation between Mongolia and Korea and their role in promoting security and peace in North East Asia.
